  4. The original fortune program was neat, but it was slow, especially for a
  5. floppy system.  I have a hard drive and used to copy the fortunes file
  6. to ram: for speed. 
  7.  
  8. Version 2.0 runs from 120 to 290% faster (I timed 100 passes for both 
  9. versions) and now is quite usable for both hard-drive and floppy users.

  11. I must give some credit for the speed increase to Rick Stevens.  He wrote
  12. a similar program called "cookie" that ramdomly displayed a fortune.  I 
  13. refined his selection method for my fortune program.  Unlike his data file,
  14. the fortunes data file can be easily edited or added to.

  16. Like his program, the longer the first line of each fortune, the more likely
  17. it is to be selected.  That is a slight trade off for speed over my earlier
  18. version.

  20. If you have an earlier version of fortune, be sure to replace the fortunes
  21. file too, it's gotten bigger since I uploaded fortune the first time.

  23. Feel free to delete, edit or add to the fortunes file that is enclosed.  Just
  24. follow the syntax directions in the fortune.doc file.  I have been collecting
  25. these fortunes for years and finally found a use for them.  If you have a
  26. substantial file of your own, I would appreciate if you would send me a copy.

  30. Added the ability to add/change color to the lines of the displayed fortunes.
  31. Following the directions in the doc file, I suggest changing the escape
  32. value to a backslash instead of the default '*'.  This is easier and follows
  33. the 'normal' UNIX syntax.  Obtain the version of udate (date) and echo that
  34. I've written and they will all use the escape value that you set.

  39. Added voice by command line option (-s) and an icon which when clicked, will 
  40. speak the fortune.
